At Riverfront Vet, we know your pet is more than a pet – they’re your heart on four legs. And when something unexpected happens, it can be scary. While we’re always here for emergencies, being prepared and knowing a few first aid basics can make all the difference in those first critical moments.

Here are some of our top first aid tips to help you stay calm and take action if your pet ever needs help.

Stay calm. Your pet is watching you.
In any emergency, your tone and body language matter. Speak gently and move slowly. Your calm can help ease their fear, even if you’re panicking inside.

Have a pet first aid kit on hand.
Keep one in your home and car. It should include items like gauze, non-stick bandages, tweezers, antiseptic wipes, a digital thermometer, and our clinic’s contact info. You can also add your pet’s medical records and any medications they take regularly.

Control bleeding with gentle pressure.
If your pet has a cut or injury that’s bleeding, apply clean gauze or a cloth and press gently but firmly. If the bleeding doesn’t slow in a few minutes, call us right away or head to an emergency clinic.

Know the signs of heatstroke.
Excessive panting, drooling, weakness, or collapse can all be signs your pet is overheating. Move them to a cool area, offer water, and call us immediately. Heatstroke can become life-threatening fast.

If your pet is choking, don’t wait.
If your pet is pawing at their mouth, gagging, or can’t breathe, it’s an emergency. Call us as soon as possible and do not try to remove an object unless you can see it clearly.

Don’t give human medication without calling us.
Even medications that seem harmless, like ibuprofen or Tylenol, can be toxic to pets. Always call before giving anything at home.

Keep our number somewhere easy to find.
In a moment of panic, the last thing you want is to search Google. Save our clinic’s number in your phone and post it on your fridge. Include the address and number of the closest emergency vet clinic, just in case.

Trust your gut.
If something feels off, call us. You know your pet better than anyone. If they’re acting strange, in pain, or just not themselves, it’s always better to err on the side of caution.

Pet emergencies don’t always give you warning. But with a little preparation and the right knowledge, you can be the calm, confident hero your pet needs until help arrives.

And remember – we’re just a call away. Whether you need advice, reassurance, or emergency care, Riverfront Vet is here to support you and your four-legged family every step of the way.

Remember: While providing first aid to your pet is important, it should always be followed by prompt veterinary attention. First aid is not a replacement for professional veterinary care, but it can be crucial in preserving your pet’s life until they receive proper medical treatment.
